Why Are Safety Sensors So Important?

Garage door safety sensors emit an infrared beam across the door’s path. If anything breaks that beam — a child, pet, or object — the door automatically reverses. This is a mandatory safety feature on all garage door openers made since 1993. When sensors malfunction, the door may refuse to close or worse — close on something.

FAQ

Sensor FAQs

Can I bypass the safety sensors to close my door?
You can temporarily close the door by holding the wall button continuously — but this should only be used in an emergency. Operating a door with bypassed sensors is a serious safety hazard, especially with children or pets around. Get the sensors fixed as soon as possible.
Why does my garage door only fail to close sometimes?
Intermittent failure is often caused by morning or afternoon sunlight hitting one sensor directly, a vibrating bracket that briefly misaligns, or insects nesting in front of the sensor beam. We can diagnose and solve all of these.
How much does sensor repair cost?
Sensor repairs cost vary depending on conditions of the sensor. Simple realignment are cheaper. Replacing a damaged sensor unit typically costs more than repairing the sensor. We always quote before starting work.
Do new sensors work with my existing opener?
In most cases, yes — replacement sensors are available for virtually every opener brand. We carry compatible sensors for LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Craftsman, and many others.
