A sudden bang from the garage
A torsion spring releases its energy all at once when it breaks. Homeowners often think something fell or a car backfired.
A loud bang from the garage, and now the door won’t lift past a few inches? That is almost always a broken spring. We replace torsion and extension springs across Toronto and the GTA the same day you call, size them to your door’s real weight, and balance the door so the new springs last. You get a written quote before any work starts.
The opener does not lift your garage door — the springs do. They are wound to carry almost the full weight of the door, so the motor only has to guide it. A standard double steel door on a GTA subdivision home is far too heavy to lift safely without them.
When a spring snaps, that counterbalance disappears in a second. The opener strains, lifts a few inches and reverses, or just hums. Running it again and again can strip the opener gear or bend the top section, turning one repair into two.
Across the GTA we see both main types. Most homes built from the 1990s on — in Vaughan, Brampton, Markham, Milton and similar suburbs — use torsion springs on a bar above the door. Many older bungalows and detached garages in Etobicoke, Scarborough, North York and east-end Toronto still run extension springs along the horizontal tracks. We repair and replace both.

A torsion spring releases its energy all at once when it breaks. Homeowners often think something fell or a car backfired.
Look at the spring on the bar above the door. A clear 2–3 inch gap between coils means it has snapped.
With the opener released, a healthy door lifts easily and stays halfway. If it feels like dead weight, the springs are not doing their job.
Most modern openers sense the extra load and stop or reverse to protect themselves.
On a two-spring door, one broken spring makes one side lift unevenly and can throw a cable off its drum.
When spring tension is gone, the lift cables lose tension too and can unwind from the drums at the top corners.
We confirm the spring is the problem, check the cables, drums, bearings and rollers, and give you a written quote before anything is touched.
Wire size, inside diameter, length and wind direction are matched to your door’s actual weight and height — not just copied from the old spring, which may have been wrong.
On two-spring doors we recommend replacing both. They have done the same number of cycles, and the second one usually is not far behind.
We set the tension so the door stays put halfway, then test the opener’s force settings and auto-reverse.
Springs, bearings, hinges and rollers are lubricated and hardware is tightened so the whole door runs smoother and quieter.
A wound torsion spring holds enough force to cause serious injury. Most garage door injuries happen during DIY spring work, usually when a winding bar slips or a screwdriver is used instead of proper bars.
The danger is in the details: winding direction, the right number of turns for your door height, and set screws tightened correctly. Get one wrong and the door can drop or the spring can spin loose.
If a spring breaks, leave the door closed, unplug the opener if the door is stuck partway, keep children and pets clear, and call us. We will make it safe and get it working the same day.
